In the interests of enlightening the public about how lawyers contribute to the public good, Mr. Schaberg was a financial supporter of an independent studio film, starring Academy Award winner Timothy Hutton, nominee David Strathairn, Leelee Sobieski and Azure Skye, called "Heavens Fall," depicting the personal and courtroom struggles of the lawyer who took up the defense of the Scotsboro Boys in Alabama of the 1930s, a controversy which led to several U.S. Supreme Court decisions confirming the right to trial by jury and the right to an attorney.
For ten years John acted as Chairman of the Parish Finance Council of St. Peter's Cathedral in Belleville, Illinois, and he chaired a million-dollar Capital Campaign and helped to redevelop the neighborhood into a senior living community.
