Tom has more than 25 years of legal experience. He has practiced extensively in employment law for more than 15 years and currently leads the firm’s Employment Law Practice Group. He represents clients in both traditional and alternative forms of dispute resolution. He has extensive trial and appellate experience in state and federal courts, and represents employers before local, state and federal civil rights agencies and commissions.
Tom represents small, medium and large employers including corporations, restaurants, schools, and churches. He has also represented municipalities. He has handled discrimination claims involving all protected classes: age, race, creed, gender, economic status, color, sexual orientation, Veteran’s preference status, religion, national origin, marital status, pregnancy, status with regard to public assistance, and disability. Tom also has experience handling Section 1981 and Section 1983 public entities and civil rights litigation.
He has represented employers covered by Employment Practices Liability (EPL) insurance since the inception of such coverage.
Tom is experienced in evaluating, investigating and litigating workplace and premises misconduct including sexual misconduct and assault.
Tom also handles breach of contracts, non-competes and trade secrets claims, and whistle-blower lawsuits. He is also experienced in the litigation of defamation, slander and libel claims, and other employment-related claims. He also handles professional liability, D & O and E & O claims.
Outside of litigation, Tom consults with clients on strategies, processes and methods to avoid or reduce future employment-related claims. He provides in-house counseling and training on employment and personnel matters.
Because of Tom’s expertise in employment law, he has been a frequent guest lecturer at the Minnesota Institute of Legal Education, and the American Academy of Trial Lawyers.
He has achieved the highest possible Martindale-Hubbell rating for the highest level of legal ability and adherence to professional standards of conduct, ethics, reliability and diligence.
