Outreach and research
Our attorneys are frequent guest lecturers at industry and legal conferences on topics such as fire investigations, product liability prevention, evidence preservation,
catmn-web1phic loss and mock trails/focus groups. We also work with internationally recognized experts to test new theories on areas of origin, arson, electrical and chemical ignition, fuel gas explosions, and mode of failure of consumer and recreational products. The methodology includes laboratory analysis, test burns, and controlled explosions in buildings and vessels. To view some test sites, visit www.foleymansfield.com/FireExplosions.html.
Example:
In November 2004, Foley & Mansfield’s technical group and national experts conducted demonstrations, experiments and tests on various powerboats and yachts. The tests included: gasoline vapor migration and ignition, propane gas migration and ignition, the ignition of the boat during shrink wrap operations resulting in ignition of materials (boat cover and seat cushions). The subsequent fire spread to the adjacent boats and a multi-stall storage shed. The raw data from the sensors, detectors, and thermocouples are available to insurance companies and identified experts. In addition, the still photography and video may be of interest to various experts around the country in order to shield them from Daubert and Frye motions to strike their respective testimony in cases involving ignition and fire propagation theories.
We believe that the training of experts prior to a loss, rather than after the loss, is an important as the technical training of our attorneys.
