participated as faculty at the Michigan Judicial Institute – Family Division
Referee Seminar on HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act)
Privacy Rules held on October 7 and 8, 2009. Approximately 90 referee/judges
from across Michigan were in attendance for the presentation, which provided an
overview of the HIPAA Privacy Rules and addressed how the Rules may impact use
and disclosure of medical information in orders and recommendations issued
within the context of family law matters. The
Michigan Judicial
Institute provides comprehensive continuing education programs for judicial
branch employees; assisting judicial associations and external organizations to
plan and conduct training events; providing complete and up-to-date legal
reference materials for judges, quasi-judicial hearing officers, and others;
maintaining a reference library for use by judicial branch employees; and
conducting tours of and other public outreach activities for the Michigan
Supreme Court Learning Center.
